(Smithtown, NY)…Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta spoke before the Commack Coalition of Caring to explain his legislation to prohibit the retail sale of marijuana products in Suffolk County. Upon hearing that the Governor wants to legalize marijuana in the State of New York this spring, Legislator Trotta took the initiative to introduce legislation so that Suffolk County could opt out of selling retail marijuana if it becomes legal.

“Having been a member of the Suffolk County Police Department for 25 years, I am aware of the deleterious effects that marijuana can have on an individual, particularly those under the age of 25, whose brains are not fully developed. Moreover, there are no standardized tests that police can administer to determine if a person is under the influence of marijuana when stopped for a traffic infraction or accident,” said Legislator Trotta. \

The Legislature held a public hearing on this legislation at its March 5 General Meeting in Riverhead and has recessed it until 2pm at its March 26 meeting at the William Rogers Legislature Building on Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge.
