ROCKY POINT, NY- On Sunday, March 17th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker participated in the 69th Annual Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Legislator Anker was joined by local elected officials, Friends of St. Patrick volunteers, Parade Grand Marshal John McNamara, Parade Queen Jazmine Lang, and her Lady-in-Waiting Emily Hampson. Following the parade, Legislator Anker joined the Rocky Point VFW for their post-parade celebration, which included a hearty meal of corned beef and cabbage.
“The Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day parade is always a fun and exciting event that brings the community together,” said Legislator Anker. “I would like to thank all of the many volunteers and participants for their warm hearts and dedicated efforts to ensuring the parade’s success!”
In 1950, local businessman John M. Sullivan and George Faulkner formed the Friends of Saint Patrick. The group pledged to provide the community with an opportunity to reconnect with friends and neighbors after the long winter they endured. The first parade occurred on March 11, 1951 and followed the same three mile route it follows today along 25A from Miller Place to Broadway in Rocky Point.
This year’s Grand Marshal, John McNamara is the Youth Minister at St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church in Shoreham, and is also active in his home parish of St. Anthony’s in Rocky Point and St. Louis de Montfort in Sound Beach. The parade queen, Jazmine Lang, is a junior at Rocky Point High School. Her Lady-in-Waiting, Emily Hampson, is a sophomore at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
