Each year in March, Women's History Month is celebrated in Suffolk County. In 2002, the Legislature passed a Resolution (No. 786-2002) stating that each Suffolk County Legislator shall select a "Woman of Distinction" who resides in his/her respective Legislative District to be honored as such. For 2019, Legislator Tom Muratore named Teresa Sullivan of Selden. Joined by her Vietnam Veteran husband Dennis, Teresa received her proclamation to commemorate the event at the March 26th General Meeting.
Teresa had a long career in banking, retiring in 2013 from the Centereach branch at HSBC. She joined the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for Post 4927 in Centereach in 2006. She served for 8 years as Secretary, and then was voted in as Treasurer, a position she still holds today. Teresa assists with the Post’s many events, such as parades for Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day, legislative breakfasts, visiting the veterans in the nursing home at Christmas with gifts, as well as the Recycled Rides Program, where veterans receive donated vehicles. “This is not an exhaustive list of Teresa’s community volunteerism and high regard for veterans,” stated Legislator Muratore. “I applaud her efforts and take great pleasure in recognizing her as a ‘Woman of Distinction’ in my district.”
