Late in 2018, Legislator Steven J. Flotteron was contacted by a group of concerned residents with regards to the increase of school bullying and depression among young students. They asked for his assistance in bringing more education and resources into the schools for families and parents struggling with these issues.
The Legislator reached out to local health care, school administrators and houses of worship to form a round-table forum to discuss a forum to educate and listen to issues. Legislator Flotteron is proud to announce, a Mental Health Symposium offered by West Islip Schools Health & Wellness Committee in collaboration with Good Samaritan Hospital on Monday, April 1, 7pm at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School Auditorium.
Topics presented by physicians, social workers and teachers will include: Brain Research, A Perspective of Facing Adversity, Resiliency and Drug Awareness.
“There are a lot of young people who are silently struggling with self-esteem from negative interactions on social media and with peers. The value and importance of awareness and education for parents and families is invaluable to knowing the warning signs and the resources available,” said Legislator Flotteron.
