PORT JEFFERSON, NY – On Monday, April 1, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker, Chairwoman of the Seniors and Consumer Protection Legislative Committee, provided a scam awareness presentation to the members of the Terryville Homemakers. Legislator Anker explained the tell-tale signs of common phone and Internet scams, and steps residents can take to protect themselves from scams and report suspicious or fraudulent phone calls or emails.
“It is so important to be an educated consumer when it comes to avoiding scams and knowing how to report them,” said Legislator Anker. “I urge all residents to be cautious when receiving unsolicited phone calls and emails, and to never give out their personal information over the phone.”
Legislator Anker’s office has partnered with the Suffolk County Police Department to create SCPDScamAlert.org, to help the community report fraud, as well as a “Smart Seniors” brochure guide to help senior residents avoid common scams. Legislator Anker also collaborates with the New York Attorney General’s office to provide “Smart Senior” presentations to communities and organizations in her district.
