Presiding Officer Gregory Urges Residents to Plan for Future Healthcare Needs

Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory welcomes residents to his Medicaid/Medicare “Lunch & Learn” Worksh

Wyandanch, NY – In an effort to ensure that residents are aware of the importance of planning for future healthcare needs, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently partnered with healthcare experts from various local organizations to present a Medicaid/Medicare “Lunch & Learn” Workshop at the East Farmingdale Fire Department.

The workshop, which took place on Monday, May 13, featured presentations by representatives from Hudson River Healthcare, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Suffolk’s Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HIICAP), Suffolk County Office for the Aging, and Touro Law Center’s Elder Law Clinic and Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Rights Clinic. Presenters discussed the basics of Medicaid and Medicare and gave on overview on navigating the system.

“Unfortunately, critical healthcare decisions are very often made during a health emergency,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Our office has had several residents requesting assistance with Medicaid or Medicare after a loved one is unexpectedly hospitalized, and they are then faced with making difficult decisions during a very stressful time. Healthcare advisors recommend planning ahead for one’s future healthcare needs, as well as the needs of aging or disabled family members. I recommend everyone take the time to familiarize themselves with this process.”

"Thank you to Presiding Officer Gregory for inviting HIICAP to speak to the community about Medicaid and Medicare benefits and coverage,” said Maryflorence Brennan, coordinator for Suffolk County’s Health Insurance Information Counseling Assistance Program. “The more residents know about their coverage, the better they are able to make informed decisions as to what is best for them.”

Residents in need of assistance can reach HIICAP at their helpline, 631-979-9490 ext. 18.; Hudson River Health Care at 1-844-HRH-Care (option 3) or by email at insurance@hrhcare.org; Suffolk County Office for the Aging at 631-853-8200; and Touro Law Center clinics at 631-761-7470.

If you missed the workshop and would like to learn more about healthcare planning, contact Presiding Officer Gregory’s district office at 631-854-1111.
