Hauppauge, NY – At today’s General Meeting, Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer presented the members of the Northport High School Mock Trial Team with a proclamation recognizing their outstanding 2019 season. After a series of fierce competitions between 26 public and private high schools across Suffolk, these distinguished and committed students took home a 1st place victory at the county tournament sponsored by the Suffolk County Bar Association.
“Mock Trial helps to foster essential life skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and conflict resolution that will benefit all students no matter what field of study they wish to pursue. As our future leaders, I applaud their thirst for knowledge and justice. Congratulations on your victory!” said Legislator Spencer.
In competition, teams argue both sides of a case and assume the roles of attorneys and witnesses. They are then rated by local judges or attorneys, who score the presentation based on preparation, performance and professionalism. The tournament also incorporates valuable lessons on ethics, improves listening, speaking, reading, and reasoning skills, and stimulates interest in law-related careers. On May 19th, the team represented Suffolk County at the New York State finals, where they received a commendable 4th place.
