HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. – On Tuesday, July 16th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker congratulated three Marine Bureau Officers, Matthew Funaro, Shane Parker, and Cory Kim who resued a man after his kayak overturned in the Long Island Sound off of Sound Beach, NY.
“It is a great honor to congratulate these three brave heroes who have gone to great lengths to serve and protect the residents of our community. I thank them for their dedication to the safety of residents who enjoy Long Island’s beautiful North Shore,” said Legislator Anker.
On June 15th, Officers Funaro, Kim and Parker spotted a man clinging to his overturned kayak while they were on patrol around 12:20 pm. The water was 64 degrees and the wind was pushing the man and his kayak further from the shore. The three officers quickly responded, pulling the man and his 10-foot kayak aboard their vessel. The officers then transported the man to Mount Sinai Marina where he was placed into the care of Port Jefferson EMS members.
