MIDDLE ISLAND, NY – Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recently attended the Gold Star Families Recognition Ceremony at Bartlett Pond Park in Middle Island. The service included songs, prayers, readings, and remarks by the community and local leaders.
“I commend the Longwood community for its commitment to memorializing our fallen heroes and recognizing the sacrifices of their families,” said Legislator Anker. “Thank you to the Longwood Alliance and the Middle Island Civic Association for organizing this commemorative event every year.”
The United States began observing Gold Star Mother’s Day on the last Sunday in September in 1936. Today, the nation recognizes the sacrifice that all Gold Star Family members make when a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, or other loved one dies in service to the nation.
