Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland joined County Executive Steve Bellone, Legislators Dr. William Spencer and Tom Donnelly and local advocates to announce the installation of two new nitrogen-reducing on-site wastewater treatment systems at Vanderbilt Museum County Park. The installation of these new systems is part of Suffolk County’s “Reclaim Our Water” initiative which seeks to reduce nitrogen pollution of groundwater and surface waters from cesspools and septic systems.

County Executive Bellone also announced that during the month of October alone more than 100 residents have applied for grants through the County’s Septic Improvement Program.

“The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation designated Northport Bay, adjacent to the Vanderbilt, an impaired waterbody and an estuary of national significance and, as such, the installation of these systems is crucial to the improvement of our local waterways,” said Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland. “Suffolk County is serious about mitigating nitrogen pollution in our waterways and I am proud to partner with County Executive Bellone and my colleagues on the Legislature to solve this pressing issue.”
