(BRENTWOOD, NY) – Suffolk County Legislator Samuel Gonzalez (D-Brentwood) delivered face masks, gloves, and food to Brentwood day laborers who gathered outside the La Placita Supermarket as they waited for work.

While maintaining the 6-foot social distance, Legislator Gonzalez’s team, Suffolk County Police Chief, Stuart Cameron, Third Precinct Police Officers, volunteers and leaders from organizations such as Jibaritos with Troops, Masjid Darul Quran, Loyal Chaplains, Inc., and Shah e Najaf Center, Brentwood, NY spent the morning distributing food, masks and gloves to the day laborers who are highly-susceptible to COVID-19 exposure because they must work outside of their homes to earn a living.

More than 200 face masks were given out to day laborers who have been the victims of xenophobic attacks and insults. “I am here to fight for the rights of all the residents of my district and to ensure that they receive the necessary care regardless of their immigration status,” said Legislator Gonzalez. “The only thing we need to discriminate against is the true enemy called Coronavirus, which is responsible for the loss of hundreds and hundreds of lives.” SCPD Chief Cameron said, “We are here to work for the community and to remind you once again that you must maintain a social distance and wear face masks to stop the wave of contagion within our community.” Ross Astrada of Loyal Chaplins said, “We have a spiritual message for all day laborers because you are essential workers and deserve the full support and respect of elected officials.” Legislator Gonzalez concluded the event by thanking the day laborers for playing a vital role in helping keep the economy active despite the negative effects of the Coronavirus pandemic.
