Legislator Hahn to Host Narcan Training Seminar on 9/28/2017

In the continuing battle against the opiate and painkiller epidemic, County health officials will offer to the public a free Naloxone training session hosted by Suffolk Legislator Kara Hahn.  The seminar will be held in Community Room A of the Comsewogue Public Library in Port Jefferson Station on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. and will teach participants how to recognize an overdose and how to administer Naloxone, an opioid antagonist that can reverse the effects of an overdose, more commonly known as Narcan.

In 2013, Legislator Kara Hahn sponsored legislation that allowed the Department of Health Services to obtain New York State’s approval to become a certified Narcan training center and teach individuals about the warning signs of an opiate overdose as well as how to administer treatments to victims.  This followed the success of an expanded Narcan pilot program that Legislator Hahn established the previous year.  That program is credited with saving hundreds of lives to date.

“It is important that non-medical personnel get trained to administer Narcan because it is often the family and friends of a victim who are first on the scene when someone is overdosing,” Legislator Hahn said. “I believe that there needs to be as many people as possible trained on what to do if they encounter such a horrific situation.”

Pre-registration is required for this free training.  To register please call Legislator Hahn’s office at (631) 854-1650.
