Lindenhurst, NY, August 10th, 2020: On Monday, August 10th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined with over a dozen local officials on the steps of Babylon Town Hall to kick off the Town’s 2020 Census awareness campaign.
The Town of Babylon’s 2020 Census Campaign serves to encourage residents of all hamlets within the Town of Babylon to complete their census. Presently, the Town of Babylon only has about a 60% response rate regarding the census- causing neighboring townships with 70% and 80% response rates to gain more funding for things like schools, public works, and public safety agencies like fire districts. By having more residents returning their census, the Town would be able to receive the funding we deserve. The census also helps to determine representation in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College.
The deadline to complete the census packet is September 30th. Leading up to that day, a unified campaign by local elected officials, businesses, school and fire districts, and religious institutions will take place, encouraging people to complete the census. This will include a “Chalk the walk” contest for children, as well as widespread social media campaigns and the deployment of census takers.
The information provided to the U.S. Census Bureau on your census document will remain completely confidential. Should you speak with a census taker, the interview will be quick and easy- no citizenship, social security, or banking information will be asked. Masks will always be worn by census takers, and by law they must keep your answers confidential.
