On July 30th, Legislator Steven J. Flotteron surprised West Islip resident, Fay Otranto, on her 104th birthday. Friends and family gathered at the home of her daughter, Janet, and son-in-law, Lawrence, to celebrate this incredible milestone.
Ms. Otranto lived in Bay Ridge Brooklyn for 62 years. At age 29, she met her husband, Louis, had her own family, daughter, Janet and son, John and eventually moved to Cape Coral Florida. After running their own sterling silver manufacturing business, they enjoyed retirement in Florida until Louis’ passing at age 94. Fay lived alone until age 100, and then moved in with her daughter, Janet, in West Islip.
For the next three years, she was an active member of the West Islip Senior Center and credits her longevity to making many close friendships. At 103, she fell and broke her hip. While in rehab, she learned to dance the cha-cha and was an example to younger patients in her healing powers.
“I thank you Steve and everyone for being so sweet because that is what I live for.” “Receiving this Proclamation is such an honor for me, in addition to turning 104,” said Ms. Otranto.
