HUNTINGTON, N.Y. – ’Tis the season of giving, and Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Rob Calarco is encouraging residents to give the gift of loyalty to small businesses.
Presiding Officer Calarco joined chamber of commerce members and elected officials in Huntington village on Saturday to kick off the holiday season and encourage residents to shop locally as they search for the perfect gifts for their loved ones.
“The pandemic has been a challenging time for small businesses, and with the holiday season upon us, we are encouraging residents to consider shopping locally,” said Presiding Officer Calarco. “Small business owners have made it easier than ever to shop safely during the pandemic with many stores expanding services to match the convenience of shopping with big online retailers. Local stores are now selling their merchandise online, offering shipping and delivery, and even working with customers to arrange for curbside pickup. With each purchase we make this year, let us use our purchasing power to provide a boost to the local economy and support our friends and neighbors.”
According to Empire State Development’s 2019 Annual Report on the State of Small Businesses, small businesses make up a sizeable portion of New York’s economy, with 98 percent of businesses in the state employing fewer than 100 workers. In 2017, businesses with fewer than 20 employees employed more than 295,000 people on Long Island.
Presiding Officer Calarco encourages Suffolk County residents to visit the websites and social media pages of their local chambers of commerce and their favorite stores to see what online and pickup services may be available. Residents who elect to shop in person are reminded to follow all state COVID-19 guidelines, including wearing a mask in public and maintaining social distancing.
“Loyalty is the best gift we can give to small businesses this year. From sponsoring our children’s sports teams to donating prizes for charity events, our local businesses are always there for our communities when we need them. Now we have an opportunity to step up when they need us,” Presiding Officer Calarco said.
