Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly, himself a three-decade Decorated Member of the Deer Park Fire Department (DPFD) and a retired FDNY Lieutenant, joined local officials and fellow DPFD members to recognize and honor Ex-Captain Michael Palmo for his 50 years of service at the department’s Installation Event on October 7.
Ex-Captain Palmo joined the DPFD in October 1969, later becoming a charter member of Ladder Co. 4 where he rose through the ranks to become Captain of that Company, serving from 1978-1980. He is a delegate for the Town of Babylon Firefighters Association and is a Trustee for the Deer Park Fire Department Benevolent Association. As a member of the DPFD, Ex-Captain Palmo has been very active, currently serving in the Fire Police Squad, a unique group of individuals tasked with protecting members during active alarms. He received many honors for his outstanding service in the Fire Police Squad including a Unit Citation for his efforts in ending a building fire.
Ex-Captain Palmo served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1965.
“For half a century, Ex-Captain Palmo has continuously displayed truly inspirational bravery and a commitment to the community that is beyond compare,” said Legislator Donnelly. “As a retired member of the FDNY and a current volunteer DPFD firefighter myself, it was an honor to recognize and thank him for his exceptional selfless service.”
