Jerry Rubano, MD, a Critical Care Surgery Specialist and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Stony Brook University’s Renaissance School of Medicine, has been named the 2021 “Healthcare Hero” Honoree for the Fifth Legislative District by Deputy Presiding Officer Kara Hahn.
The “Healthcare Hero” designation was created by the Legislature earlier this year to recognize one medical professional, annually, from each legislative district for contributions made toward serving the healthcare needs of the community.
For this inaugural term, Dr. Rubano was selected for his care of critically ill COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic. Despite being an experienced trauma surgeon, Dr. Rubano and his team at Stony Brook University Hospital worked around the clock to care for the sickest patients within our County, many of whom suffered from conditions not treatable by the surgical experience he possessed. In addition to the care he and his team provided, these same medical professions also keep the patients’ concerned family members updated on loved ones’ conditions.
It is through Dr. Rubano’s passion and compassion for his neighbors during their time of greatest medical need that our community finds an example of leadership that represents the characteristics of a true “Healthcare Hero.”
