On July 25th, Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron celebrated the Life of Rocco G. Pepe with his daughters, Stefanie Ball and Debbie Pepe Rosa and many friends in recognition of his many contributions to the West Islip community. They were unable to get together when he passed due to COVID-19 restrictions but family and friends paid tribute to one of West Islip’s most dedicated volunteers and loving husband, father and grandfather at Reflection Park at the West Islip Marina.
Rocky, as he was better known, was synonymous with the words community, volunteer, commitment and leadership. For nearly 25 years he was committed to helping others and his community as a member of The West Islip Beautification Society, serving as President for several terms. He was instrumental in: Madeleine’s Playground at the West Islip Marina and the Chairing of the Reflection Garden. He was also responsible for the addition of the flagpole and Library Book drop-off station in the playground. In addition, every spring he worked with other volunteers doing planting and maintaining the gardens at the marina and throughout West Islip and decorating for the holidays.
Rocky would have turned 91 years old on February 14th, but he never slowed down in his volunteering and contributing to organizations throughout the Town. He was also an active member of the American Legion Post 1738, the West Islip Historical Society, the West Islip Chamber of Commerce and West Islip Association. Another passion was constructing and designing custom Corn Hole games for local organizations and charities. It would take him several weeks to make each game which he donated to benefit others.
