SHOREHAM, NY – Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recently joined the Lohman family as they celebrated the 100th birthday of Maurice Lohman at their home in Shoreham. Legislator Anker presented Maurice with a proclamation to thank him for his lifelong contributions to his community and to the country as a military veteran.
I want to wish Morry a very happy 100th birthday,
said Legislator Anker. Morry has dedicated his life to not only serving our country, but also to improving and expanding education in our state. Through his time teaching and working at the New York State Department of Education, he has encouraged learning throughout every stage of life.
My dad embraced the day with both awe and gratitude,
said Maurice’s daughter Deb Lohman. As he put it, ‘Who ever thought I would make it to be 100!’
Maurice joined the United States Navy in 1942, where he proudly served as a Radar Man aboard two aircraft carriers in the Pacific until the end of World War II. Following his military service, Maurice pursued a career with the New York State Department of Education, where he developed math regents exams for high school aged children. He later received his doctorate from Columbia University and went on to teach students at Queens College. As a continuing French horn player and artist, Maurice has many great talents that he loves to share with his three children and grandchildren.
