Islandia: Suffolk County Legislator Stephanie Bontempi (Centerport) joined with her colleagues in government, Northwell Health employees and various community volunteers on March 22nd, at a press conference at Jake’s 58 Hotel & Casino. The event brought some much needed attention to a very successful collaborative effort between the casino and Northwell Health’s Ukraine Relief Fund.
The innovative joint undertaking allows gamblers to donate a portion of their winnings to the fund, without any complicated steps. So far, more than $10,000 has been raised and there are certainly indications that more success is on the horizon for this venture.
“It’s absolutely inspiring to see a new and creative way to help the people of Ukraine,” said Bontempi. “Who would think that a trip to a local casino could assist people on the other side of the world?”
Legislator Bontempi is no stranger to the various relief efforts taking place throughout Suffolk County, as her office participated in a highly successful supply drive some weeks back in conjunction with the County Executive’s office.
“As the needs of the people of Ukraine change, we have to adapt to help them in the best possible way,” added Bontempi. “Where there is a will to help there is a way, and it’s clear that the will of Suffolk County residents is very strong in this case.”
