Suzanne Johnson Nominated for Suffolk County Woman of Distinction Award

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker presents a proclamation to Suzanne Johnson

MOUNT SINAI, NY – Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recognized Suzanne Johnson as her nominee for the Suffolk County Woman of Distinction Award. As established by Resolution 786-2002, every year in celebration of Woman’s History Month, each Suffolk County Legislator nominates a woman from their district to be considered to receive the county-wide Woman of Distinction Award. The recipient of the award is decided by the Suffolk County Women’s Advisory Commission and must be a woman who lives or works in Suffolk County and has a profound impact on the community through active volunteer work and leadership.

It was my distinct honor to nominate Suzanne Johnson for the 2022 Suffolk County Woman of Distinction award in recognition of her outstanding leadership and tireless volunteer efforts toward improving her community and preserving the rich history of Long Island, said Legislator Anker. Suzanne has been, and continues to be, a bright light in our community.

As a Rocky Point resident for over 40 years, Suzanne Johnson has worked at two local libraries and devoted her free time to various community organizations. She started her career on Long Island as a Media Librarian at the Port Jefferson Free Library. After 5 years, she transferred to the Longwood Public Library, where she first worked as their Media Librarian, then Assistant Director for 13 years, and finally as the Library Director. While serving the Longwood community, Ms. Johnson worked extensively with the Thomas R. Bayles Local History Collection to update a library publication entitled “Longwood Long Ago,” and with co-author David Clemens to publish a history of Camp Upton in the Images of America series. Through her role as Library Director, Ms. Johnson spearheaded and managed the two-year $17.9 million renovation of the Longwood Public Library, which expanded the library’s available space for books and ability to host more community programs.

In her capacity as a community volunteer, Ms. Johnson channels her passion for local history by leading and volunteering for many local historical societies and museums including the Davis Town Meeting House Society, Hallockville Museum Farm, Long Island Library Resources Council, Yaphank Historical Society, and the Rocky Point Historical Society, where she now serves as president and oversees the restoration of the circa 1721 Noah Hallock Homestead. Additionally Ms. Johnson has been a member of the Middle Island Rotary Club, which has now joined with the Rocky Point Rotary Club, where she currently serves as the club’s Secretary. She has also dedicated time to volunteering with Boy Scout Troop 244 while her son was a boy scout.
