Huntington, N.Y. – On August 14th, the tradition of the Coral Park Basketball Tournament continued in full force. The athletes and organizers were certainly excited for a day on the court, and the beautiful weather multiplied the enjoyment for all of those who attended. The event this year was sponsored by Legislator Stephanie Bontempi (R-18th L.D.), Legislator Manuel Esteban (R-16th L.D.) and Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth.
“This event brings the community together in a very special way,” said Bontempi. “We have children, community volunteers and police officers bringing out the best in everyone while getting a lot of exercise too!”
The daylong event had two components, one for the tournament itself for the younger children, and then an alumni game for recent high school graduates. Perhaps the most notable part of the day took place early on when numerous officers of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Second Precinct joined in to help everyone warm up. The officers and athletes demonstrated some impressive athletic abilities, providing quite an entertaining spectacle for onlookers.
“Our police officers and children are so important to the community and our future,” added Bontempi. “Developing relationships while having fun in the sun is a practice that must continue.”
