Northport, NY – On December 19th, Legislator Stephanie Bontempi (R-18th LD) visited Northport High School to present a proclamation to senior Kaitlyn Ruiter during orchestra practice. Not too long ago, Ruiter contributed to an album put together by the New York Youth Symphony, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance.
“As soon as I learned about this accomplishment, I knew I had to meet this young lady,” said Bontempi. “Being nominated for such a prestigious award at such a young age is something worth celebrating and highlighting to the community.”
The Grammy nominated album, “Works by Florence Price, Jessie Montgomery, Valerie Coleman,” has a number of pieces to which Ruiter contributed as a talented string bass player. Ruiter has been playing the instrument since the age of nine, constantly honing her skills, and now she is getting some very well deserved recognition.
“As a former teacher, I fully understand how difficult it is for a student to balance all of their other coursework with a time-consuming pursuit, such as music,” added Bontempi. “Being able to balance so many responsibilities is a skill that will last a lifetime, and if it’s enjoyable to Kaitlyn, I say keep it up!”
