HAUPPAUGE, NY—The Suffolk County Legislature today voted to reelect Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey (R-14th LD) to a second term as the leader of the 18-member legislature. The body also voted to approve a second term as Deputy Presiding Officer Steve Flotteron (R-11th LD).

“I am honored to continue my role as Presiding Officer and look forward to another productive year serving the residents of Suffolk County,” said McCaffrey. “In 2022 we introduced and passed important good-government and public safety legislation that will benefit the entire county and 2023 will see more victories that protect the taxpayers of this county. “Our plans for 2023 continues the forward momentum we have created in the legislature,” said McCaffrey. “Suffolk residents will see some important changes this year that will make their lives better, protect their wallets and their communities.”

McCaffrey has served on the legislature since 2014. He began his public service in 1990 when he was elected to serve as Trustee and Deputy Mayor of Lindenhurst--the largest Village in Suffolk County--with more than 28,000 residents and an $11.6 million annual budget. He is President of Teamsters Local 707.

Legislator Steve Flotteron has served on the Suffolk Legislature since 2017. As the chairman of the Public Safety and Budget and Finance Committees, Flotteron plays a key role in Suffolk County government.

“I want to thank my colleagues for their vote of confidence in once again naming me Deputy Presiding Officer,” said Flotteron. “There is much to do on behalf of the residents, and we are working together to restore fiscal health and safety to Suffolk County.”

In January 2022, the Republicans took control of the legislature for the first time in 16 years. The majority wasted no time in introducing and passing key legislation, including:

  • Negotiated and approved a no tax-hike, balanced $3.2 Billion budget for the residents of Suffolk County.
  • Made Suffolk communities safer by approving additional police and additional resources for the Office of the District Attorney.
  • Revised term limit laws to limit most public Suffolk County elected officials to serve only 12 years total in their office, regardless of them being consecutive or not.
  • Eliminated public campaign financing, stopping the practice of using taxpayer dollars to fund political campaigns.
  • Reinstated the ShotSpotter, improving public safety and cracking down on the increase of gun violence in our communities.
  • Worked with the Nassau County legislature to provide Island-wide relief to residents during the historic gas pricing crisis and to fight New York State-proposed accessory dwelling legislation that would have had a negative impact on our communities.
  • Voted to preserve open space and improve water quality.
  • Approved legislation mandating timely response by tow companies after accidents to improve road safety and ease traffic
  • Approved legislation cracking down on street racing
  • Strengthened County's laws regarding the use of All-Terrain Vehicles

The Suffolk County Legislature’s Presiding Officer, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey represents Suffolk County's 14th Legislative District, which encompasses the Villages of Lindenhurst and Babylon, the hamlets of West Babylon and North Lindenhurst, portions of Copiague, North Babylon, and Babylon's barrier beach communities.
