On April 4, 2023, IR-1247 “A LOCAL LAW AMENDING CHAPTER 639 TO ALLOW MOTORCYCLES TO PARK IN SPOTS DESIGNATED FOR CLEAN PASS” VEHICLES, sponsored by Legislator Leslie Kennedy passed the Suffolk County Legislature.
The legislation permits motorcycles the ability to park within spots designated for clean pass vehicles, acknowledging the reality that motorcycles are often just as more fuel efficient than green pass vehicles.
“This is a common-sense solution to utilize spaces already set aside but are rarely if ever at capacity,” said Legislator Leslie Kennedy. “The motorcyclist’s community knows the value of this measure.”
“I’d like to thank this body for recognizing that motorcycles are as fuel efficient as or more than green pass vehicles and thank the legislators for working on this,” said Jim Bar, representing the National Council of Independent Riders, prior to the vote.
“We motorcyclists aren’t looking for anytime of special treatment, we are looking for equality,” stated Debra Stondell, legislative liaison for Long Island A.B.A.T.E., prior to the vote. “Since we share the H.O.V. lane and are equally fuel efficient, we motorcyclists should share the same benefits, including parking at county facilities.”
There are over 360,000 motorcycles registered in New York State. This new designation will affect all county owned facilities.
