Northport: Legislator Stephanie Bontempi (R - 18th L.D.) will be joining forces with Legislator Manuel Esteban (R - 16th L.D.) and Legislator Robert Trotta (R - 13th L.D.) and mental health professionals to bring an important presentation to the community. The program entitled, “Breaking the Stigma: Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Our Youth” will take place at the Northport Public Library (151 Laurel Avenue, Northport) on July 31st at 7:00 p.m.
The presenters will be Gordon Gooding, LCSW, who will be speaking on mental health and substance abuse, and John Venza, LCSW-R, LMHC, who will cover cannabis and its effects on youths. The objectives of the program will be to start a real dialogue and to explore the signs and symptoms associated with mental illnesses and addiction, along will the many resources available.
“Due to the co-occurrence rates associated with mental health issues and addiction, along with the legalization of cannabis in New York State, this is a timely discussion,” said Bontempi. “It’s no secret that mental illnesses and addiction affect every socio-economic group and geographical area. Treating these issues as taboo topics, especially when they concern our children, is not going to help anyone; let’s stop the stigma now.”
