Long Island, NY - For the past four years, Nassau and Suffolk Counties have been working together to protect and improve our drinking water through the formation of the Long Island Commission on Aquifer Protection (LICAP). LICAP has reached an important milestone with the release of their Draft Groundwater Resources Management Plan (GRMP). Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D. encourages residents, community groups, environmental organizations, and all other interested parties to engage in this important process.
LICAP is a bi-county entity created by Nassau and Suffolk Counties to address quality and quantity issues facing our aquifer and to advocate for a coordinated, regional approach to groundwater resources management on Long Island. LICAP’s 236 page Groundwater Resource Management Plan offers a
comprehensive look at the many varying issues impacting Long Island’s aquiferand offers specific actionable steps and measures to guide the multiple arms of
government and regulatory agencies as they work collaboratively to protect andmanage our drinking water. The Draft Groundwater Resources Management Plan can be accessed by visiting liaquifercommission.com.
There are five opportunities for the public to weigh in on the plan at three dates in the upcoming week. Prior to each hearing, a presentation summarizing the content of the GRMP will take place by Suffolk County Water Authority Water Resources Manager Steven Colabufo, P.G. Written public comment is being accepted through Friday, December 8th. Correspondence can be mailed to: LICAP, Attn: Seth Wallach, 4060 Sunrise Highway, Oakdale NY, 11769 or emailed to LICAP@SCWA.com. LICAP is expected to vote to approve the plan at their next meeting on Wednesday, December 13, 2017.
