On Monday, October 21, 2023, Legislator Leslie Kennedy honored the efforts of Boy Scout Troops 566, 272, 2720, and 197, in addition to Cub Scout Packs 216 and 272. The collection of scouts created a pathway leading from Lake Ronkonkoma to an adjacent pond.
The area is not new to scouting as two Eagle Scout projects were completed at Lake Ronkonkoma on county parkland in 2006 and 2011, respectably, by the Cristino brothers. George, the elder brother, researched the history of Lake Ronkonkoma and placed a written record in a commemorative plaque for all to see. Steven, the younger of the two, added a brick path and walkway that was destroyed by Super Storm Sandy.
The scope of the most recent work was moving in shredded bark by the wheel barrel full to create the pathway as well as beautify the area.
“It is great to see so many different communities come together in the name of scouting to enhance this county treasure,” stated Legislator Leslie Kennedy. “I look forward to enjoying this new trail, and would like to congratulate all that worked on it.”
Additionally, Daves Tree Service, Stone Cretes, Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association, Inc., Lake Ronkonkoma Historic Commission, Inc., Maloney’s Lake Funeral Home & Crematory Center, Legislator Leslie Kennedy, and other licensed professionals were involved in the collaborative efforts.
