Port Jefferson, NY– Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn is partnering with Friends of Karen, a non-profit organization that provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses and their families, to host a community blood drive on Monday, August 14, 2017 at Port Jefferson Village Hall.  In addition to blood donations, the drive will also register interested participants into the national bone marrow registry for a potential future donation of marrow to someone diagnosed with a life threatening blood cancer like Leukemia or Lymphoma.

Both drives will be held from 2:00PM to 8:00PM in Port Jefferson Village’s Courtroom located on the second floor of Village Hall – 121 West Broadway, Port Jefferson.  As a token of appreciation, the New York Blood Center will provide each blood donor with a voucher for two free tickets to an upcoming New York Mets home game in recognition of his/her commitment to saving lives.

Walk-ins are welcomed, but appointments are appreciated so call (631) 854-1650 to schedule a convenient donation time, today!  Please remember to bring valid identification, eat and be well hydrated before making your donation.  Due to New York Blood Center guidelines, donors must weigh over 110 pounds, be between the ages of 16 and 75 and not have had a tattoo in the past 12 months.

Those who wish to join the National Marrow Donor Program’s “Be the Match” registry may do so by consenting to a simple cheek swab which will determine potential matches for a future marrow donation.  Participants in this registry must be between 18 and 44 years old, in good general health and committed to donating to a patient in need should a match be found.  Once included into the program, potential donors will stay on the registry until the day of his/her 61st birthday.  According to the National Marrow Donor Program, only one out of every 430 people screened eventually go on to actually donate.

Blood supplies this time of the year fall, sometimes to critical levels, with donors taking vacations and colleges and schools on recesses for the summer.  Remember, you can save the lives of three of your neighbors with one donation so please help prevent a blood shortage, or become the lifesaving match for someone with cancer and signup today.
