Superstorm Sandy Task Force to Hold Public Hearings Across Suffolk

Sandy Task Force Public Hearing Flier

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. – Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory’s Superstorm Sandy Review Task Force is holding public hearings across the county in April and May to solicit stories, feedback and ideas for solutions from victims, advocacy groups, community organizations and other stakeholders affected by the historic 2012 storm.

“Many residents are still struggling to put their lives back together after Superstorm Sandy, whether it be navigating complex recovery programs, waiting for funding, or dealing with fraudulent contractors. We want to hear their stories,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “These hearings provide an opportunity to give input to the task force, which is working on making recommendations as to how we can better prepare for and react to future storms. We have to know what went wrong in order to make it right.”

The hearings will be held at the following times and locations:

Wednesday, April 11, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Stony Brook University

Endeavour Hall, Room 120, South Campus

Wednesday, April 18, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Southampton Town Hall

116 Hampton Road, Southampton, NY 11968

Thursday, April 26, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Patchogue-Medford High School

181 Buffalo Ave., Medford NY 11763

Wednesday, May 2, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Babylon Town Hall

200 E. Sunrise Hwy., Lindenhurst, NY 11757

The task force was created through legislation sponsored by Presiding Officer Gregory and approved unanimously by the County Legislature in December. Dave Calone, former head of the Suffolk County Planning Commission, is serving as chair of the 27-member group, which includes representatives from government agencies and nonprofits as well as builders, engineering experts and planners, and local and state officials. The task force meets monthly with a clear goal of reviewing storm preparedness, response and long-term recovery programs and policies in Suffolk County to determine how to improve the region’s ability to address future disasters.
