Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly joined the Deer Park School District on March 15 in honoring Larry Hickam, a local resident and district employee who helped save the life of a man who was stuck on the tracks of the Long Island Railroad.
In a ceremony held at the Deer Park School District Administration Building, Legislator Donnelly presented Mr. Hickam with a Proclamation for the heroic actions he took when, on his way to the Deer Park Transportation depot to start his shift as a bus driver in January, he spotted a man in a wheelchair stuck on the railroad tracks in Deer Park. He immediately pulled over, rushed to the man and found the electric wheelchair’s wheels had locked with one caught in a rut. Unable to free the wheelchair on his own, Mr. Hickam flagged-down another driver. Working quickly, the Good Samaritans were able to free the trapped wheelchair and lift the man to safety just minutes before a Long Island Railroad express train passed through the crossing.
“Larry Hickam demonstrated a selfless act of courage,” said Legislator Donnelly. “His heroic actions are an inspiration to the local community, and it was a privilege to honor him.”
