At the April 25, 2017 General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Resolution 260-2017, sponsored by Legislator Tom Muratore was adopted unanimously. It “declares April 27th as “Operation Safe Stop Day” in Suffolk County to reinforce and promote school bus safety.
Operation Safe Stop is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association of Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies. Its purpose is to increase awareness of school bus safety, as well as the dangers associated with passing a school bus illegally.
To take the level of awareness even further, Legislator Muratore sponsored Resolution 40-2018, also adopted unanimously on February 6, 2018. This bill establishes an annual poster contest for elementary school aged children throughout Suffolk County, beginning in 2019.
“An estimated 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school buses every day,” stated Legislator Muratore. “That statistic is astounding to me—50,000 times each day, we put our most valued resource, our children, in peril. The awareness provided by Operation Safe Stop Day and the poster contest is crucial in preventing school bus accidents that could result in injury or death. Remember, if you approach a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing, you must STOP…it’s the law!”
