HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. – In a bipartisan vote of 16 – 2, the Suffolk County Legislature has approved $1.5 million in funding for the second phase of the Canaan Lake Restoration Project. The funds will be used for site improvements, scraping of the lakebed, and removal of sediments. This is part of an ongoing effort lead by Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco to eradicate invasive plant-life that has been polluting the lake in North Patchogue for decades. When the project is completed, Canaan Lake will return to its historical use as a recreation space. In 2017, Phase One of the project was completed after the installation of a culvert under Traction Boulevard. The new culvert allowed the lake to be drained over several days in the spring of 2018. Over the summer months, the lakebed will continue to dry out in preparation for the planned scraping of the lakebed to remove the invasive species that have been growing in Canaan Lake.
