HAUPPAUGE, NY - At the Suffolk County General Legislature Meeting on Tuesday, March 20th, Introductory Resolution 1156, sponsored by Legislator Sarah Anker, was unanimously approved to begin appraisal steps for a 9.9 acre wooded parcel near Pine Lake in Middle Island. The legislation authorizes the county to move forward in appraising the property for open space preservation. The property, located on Church Lane in Middle Island, was slated to be developed. It is within the Compatible Growth Area for the Pine Barrens and is within the watershed area for Pine Lake. Preserving this property would help to protect our ground water, local water bodies, and the character of the community.

“This resolution is the first important step towards preservation. The local community has voiced their support for preserving this property, and I am pleased to work with them on this important project. This wooded property is vital to protect the Pine Barrens, the integrity of Pine Lake, and the quality of life for local community members,” said Legislator Anker.

Local residents attended the General Legislature Meeting and voiced their support for this acquisition. In addition, letters of support were received from the Open Space Council, the Middle Island Civic Association, and the Peconic Land Trust. The Town of Brookhaven has also agreed to partner on the acquisition by providing 30% of the cost. For more information, please contact Legislator Anker’s office at 631-854-1600.
