(HUNTINGTON STATION, NY... September 26, 2018) –In cooperation with the Deer Park Community Association, Suffolk County Legislators Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station), Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) and Steve J. Flotteron (R-West Islip) recently hosted a Citizens Preparedness training class.
The program, held Sept. 12 at the Deer Park Fire House, was presented by the New York Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. It provided education on important life-savings tips and tools for citizens to protect themselves in emergencies such as hurricanes.
“While we have excellent first responders trained to handle emergencies, residents can also help themselves by preparing in advance and knowing what to do in a disaster,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Having the right supplies and knowing where to get information during an emergency can make a big difference.”
Participants received more than $100 worth of safety materials along with the information at the free program.
“The Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program is an excellent resource for residents to provide them with the tools and resources needed to prepare for any type of disaster,” said Legislator Berland. “It is imperative we do all we can to best prepare our residents to mitigate the possible damages caused by these events.”
“National Preparedness Month, recognized each September, provides an opportunity to remind us that we all must prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year. Unfortunately, disasters like the recent Hurricane Florence happen. The NYS Citizen Preparedness Class was an excellent resource for community members to become more aware and ready to cope when a disaster strikes and before first responders arrive,” Legislator Flotteron said.
