Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore recently visited April Mindlin’s 5th grade classroom at Jericho Elementary School in Centereach. Mrs. Mindlin, also a volunteer wildlife rehabilitator rescued an injured goose from Legislator Muratore’s district office parking lot over the summer.
“One day when I came to work, I found a goose sitting in the parking lot. It was unable to move, and made a noise that sounded like a call of distress. I could tell the animal was injured and needed help,” explained Legislator Muratore. “My staff and I made phone calls and got referred to the STAR Foundation, a volunteer organization that helps animals, who in turn contacted Mrs. Mindlin. She arrived quickly, carefully wrapped the goose in a blanket, and put it inside her car. She then brought the injured animal to a veterinarian, who treated the wound. Sadly, it could not be put back into the wild, but thanks to Mrs. Mindlin’s quick thinking, the goose’s life was saved. It will remain in an animal sanctuary the rest of its life.”
To express appreciation for her rescue efforts, Legislator Muratore relayed the story to Mrs. Mindlin’s students, and presented her with a Proclamation for a job well done.
