Presiding Officer Gregory Celebrates Renaming of Amityville HS Library in Honor of Local Legend

Wyandanch, NY – Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory was on hand to celebrate the renaming of Amityville Memorial High School’s Library Media Center, as “Major Nancy Leftenant-Colon Library Media Center” in recognition of the accomplishments of a local legend, Retired Army Major and Air Force Flight Nurse Nancy Leftenant-Colon.

Leftenant-Colon, an alumnus of Amityville High School, joined the Army in 1945 and in less than three years became the first black member of the regular Army Nurse Corps. She also served in the Air Force as a flight nurse and continued to make history as the only woman to hold the presidency of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., from 1989-1991.
