The Suffolk County Legislature's Democratic Majority Caucus has unanimously reelected Fifth District representative Kara Hahn to serve as its leader for the 2019 legislative session. This makes the fourth consecutive year the Setauket lawmaker will lead the 11 member conference of Democratic legislators.
“I am just as honored today as I was in 2016 when my colleagues in the Democratic caucus first voiced their confidence and trust in me to lead our fight for common-sense polices that protect all of Suffolk’s residents,” said Majority Leader Hahn. “We are living during a time of increasing divisiveness over policy, and as caucus leader I want to affirm my, and our caucus’, commitment to working with each of member of this body, irrespective of his or her political identification, for the residents of Suffolk County to grow our economy, protect our environment and defend our shared interests.”
First elected in November 2011, Legislator Hahn has, during her tenure, served as chairwoman for both the Legislature’s Environment, Planning & Agriculture [EPA] committee and its Parks & Recreation committee. Additionally, Legislator Hahn has sponsored and cosponsored more than 500 bills including the County’s lifesaving Narcan use policies that put opioid antidotes in the hands of first responders, train lay persons to use the antidote and follow-up with addicts who are saved to encourage their ongoing treatment; bans on hazardous microbeads and toxic toys and policies that protect against illegal dumping, gun violence domestic violence.
As Majority Leader, Hahn has worked to unify the caucus behind initiatives that strengthen protections for pets, discourage the continued use of single use plastics, promote pay equality and help ensure fair elections.
