PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco has sent letters to Suffolk County’s Departments requesting reports on how the partial shutdown of the Federal Government is affecting Suffolk County. Due to a lapse in appropriations, many parts of the Federal Government have been shut down for more than three weeks. Hundreds of thousands federal workers have been working without pay or have been furloughed. Although this shutdown does not directly affect the functions of Suffolk County government there are many programs that the County administers that are partially or fully funded by the Federal government.
Calarco, who chairs the Budget & Finance Committee of the Legislature, sent the letters on Wednesday, January 9th, 2019. The requests went to the Commissioners and Directors of the following departments:
“As the shutdown enters its fourth week and the effects continue to mount, I believe that it is important that Suffolk County be mindful of the potential impacts on our budget should the shutdown continue for weeks or even months,” Calarco wrote in the letter. “As Chairman of the Budget & Finance Committee of the Legislature, it is my responsibility to fully understand how the County is being affected by this shutdown.”
Calarco will report on the responses at the first meeting of the Budget & Finance Committee on February 14th.
